As the third day of the Democratic National Convention steamed on, Wednesday was full of more speeches, guest appearances, and a focus on establishing Hillary Clinton’s nomination as the best and only choice for the American people. With a focus on the years of hard work, integrity, women’s rights, child advocacy groups, and overall changes she’s fought for over her career, the Democratic National Convention showed a united front with the long term goal of defeating opponent, Donald Trump.
President Barack Obama gave a full endorsement of Hillary Clinton, asking Americans to carry her and as they carried him. The President was nostalgic as he reminisced about the first time he spoke at the Democratic National Convention twelve years ago in Boston. He gave a message of faith and optimism, touted Obamacare, marriage equality, and other Democratic platforms that his administration has successfully implemented. He portrayed America as stronger and more prosperous after the Great Recession of 2008, as a result of his presidency. Though the work was not done, the President said, he was confident that Hillary Clinton was the best person to carry the baton after eight years of his term.
As for Trump, he seemed to steal the show this Wednesday after a tweet regarding email and Russia. That’s right, Trump directly encouraged Russian cyber spies to hack servers and find Hillary’s emails. Trump told the cameras, “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.” The seriousness of the allegations of promoting espionage and risks of encouraging a foreign country to get involved will not fly under the radar in this case, and many are expecting to hear much more on this topic.
As the Hillary camp continues to drive home family, job security, and integrity, her ability to win over reluctant voters seems to be within her reach. With each new speaker presenting count by count impacts, personal experiences, friendships, and endorsements for the Nominee, this convention is on track to bring together the divided party and unite for a single cause, helping Hillary Clinton win the title of “President of the United States”.
The Democratic Committee Controversy
Now that the heat seems to have died down after leader Debbie Wasserman Schultz was ousted for making negative remarks and working against the Sanders campaign, Sanders continues to stand strong encouraging his voters to join forces and take up the cause to support Hillary Clinton as the next President. Over the course of the last two days, we have seen a major shift of allegiance from the Sanders team to the Clinton camp, giving the Democratic party the much needed unity they sought during the convention and the future of the upcoming election.
Running Mate Introductions
Wednesday was also the day for Americans and Democrats to finally hear from Tim Kaine, Clinton’s running mate. Although he has been a Senator for the last few years, most of his political career has been at the state level, giving him an opportunity to introduce himself to the country and let Americans know what he’s all about.
For the first time for many Americans heard from Virginia Senator, Tim Kaine. Kaine began his speech with a thank you to his family, fellow Congressmen, Governor, and friends. Kaine appeared confident, upbeat, and well-prepared during his presentation, offering a more laid back tone and winning over the convention center. Early on in his speech, he quickly thanked Hillary Clinton, and the party saying, “I humbly accept my party’s nomination to be the Vice President of the United States.”
Touching on his childhood growing up with values of hard work, kindness, and faith. Kaine spoke about his volunteer work early on in his career, speaking directly to the Latino population in Spanish, a stark contrast to the Trump campaign planning to build a wall around Mexico and deport immigrants.
Overall, Kaine’s presentation was well received by the convention, pointing out his history of work against discrimination, gun violence, and low income neighborhoods. Walking the crowd through his resume, experience, and accomplishments, Kaine hit the nail on the head when it came to “informing” the American people who he is and what he is about.
As the Democratic National Convention continues on with its agenda, one thing that stands out from the DNC is that each presenter has spent time focusing on the “personal” side of Hillary Clinton, pointing out not only her resume and qualifications, but her ability to lead as a mother, encourage people to rise up to their potential, and overall character. A stark contrast from the RNC which after four solid days failed to deliver.
