Only a few days ago, Trump stood before a news conference and looked directly into the camera addressed one of America’s number one enemies, Russia, to hack Clinton’s emails. Trump told the cameras, “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”
Now reports from all over are covering the fact that Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC have been hacked. People around America are outraged by the connection between this recent act of cyber terror and Donald Trump encouraging and supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin to take action against not only his opponent, but what many call our great nation.
The DNC Hack
The first wave of attacks happened last week during the Democratic Convention when emails were leaked about Democratic Committee leader, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, working against the Sanders campaign, resulting in her resignation. Wasserman announced her resignation by stating, “Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals [of winning the presidency for Hillary Clinton] is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention. As Party Chair, this week I will open and close the Convention and I will address our delegates about the stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all Americans.”
The DNC Hack Part Deux
Now for a second time, the Democratic party is being targeted by cyber terrorism and many are pointing the finger directly at Russia. FBI officials addressed the press stating the FBI, “takes seriously any allegations of intrusions, and we will continue to hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.”
The Clinton team wasn’t surprised by the recent breach, and in fact they were warned that they were potentially a target for cyber attacks, and while there have been no formal announcement of “sensitive” information being extracted, the Clinton camp said, “Our campaign computer system has been under review by outside cyber security experts. To date, they have found no evidence that our internal systems have been compromised.”
What About Trump
When the potential leader of a country addresses an advocate and encourages cyber terrorism, what does that mean? Does Trump face charges against his words which resulted in a direct violation of national security? Will this act impact his polls and sway the American people in their decision come November?
As one could imagine, with the recent breach, Trump is back peddling once again on his knee-jerk comments, stating that the comment was simply “sarcastic”. Trump is trying to mend fences and dampen the outrage by telling Fox News, “Of course I’m being sarcastic.”
While Trump may not see the overall impact of his words, many politicians, leaders, and Americans are worried that this outburst is just one more example of how careless and clueless Trump really is when it comes to the political arena. Harry Reed, the Senate Minority Leader, went on to say this about Trump, “I think that the man is a loose cannon.” “He’s done so much to hurt our country with our international relations.” A sentiment that many Americans are feeling, not only the Democrats, but high profile Republicans as well.
The question remains, will Trump be held accountable for his involvement in the recent attack on the United States, will his supporters continue to back him, and what will be revealed about the United States to the rest of the world in regards to the most recent hacked information?
