Lebron James is one of the world’s most influential athletes, known for his iconic look and effortless free throws. Now, the basketball superstar is taking his fame and fortune to the next level. Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, James has committed to helping at-risk children rise above their circumstances by opening his very own public school. The LeBron James Family Foundation, partnering with Akron Public Schools, has announced the opening of the “I Promise School” project. James tells the press, “This school is so important to me because our vision is to create a place for the kids in Akron who need it most—those that could fall through the cracks if we don’t do something.”
Of course, James has always had a soft spot for the youth of Akron, working with the University of Akron to offer a full scholarship program. His programs “Wheels for Education” and “Akron I Promise Network” have opened many doors for those in need, and James is proud to provide a positive option for his fellow Akron residents. The school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018, focusing on children in the third and fourth grades. The goal is to expand the support system to include all grades from one through eight by 2022. “We are excited about the potential of the ‘I Promise School’ to provide specialized programming and invaluable resources for our students,” said David James, superintendent of Akron’s Public Schools. “We’ve seen the positive influence of the LeBron James Family Foundation on our students, and we look forward to continuing to do everything we can to put our students in a position to be successful.”
LeBron James continues to inspire and wow the youth of our nation; now, he’s putting his fame and fortune towards a cause that’s close and dear to his heart. With two educational programs under his belt, it’s clear that Akron, Ohio, has a guardian angel looking over their education system.
