The 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards aired on Tuesday night. Hosted by DJ Khaled, the show featured a number of great performances and several artists left with well-deserved trophies. In addition to hosting, DJ Khaled also performed. To start the show, T-Pain, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, and Plies joined Khaled for“I’m So Hood.” Many were hoping that there would be a sighting of Khaled’s adorable son Asahd and they weren’t disappointed. Asahd was spotted grooving to dad’s performance from his front row seat with mom. Asahd has been called “the best-dressed baby in the biz” and he lived up to his reputation with an open shirt and some serious bling around his neck, along with some fashionable headphones to protect his little ears.
Newcomer Cardi B performed her mega-hit “Bodak Yellow.” Other performers included Trina, Yo Gotti, Migos, Playboi Carti, Uncle Luke, Flo Rida, and Gucci Mane. Many people look forward to the BET Hip Hop Awards for the cyphers. This year’s cyphers featured Ball Greazy, Zoey Dollaz, Denzel Curry, Ski Mask the Slump God, Belly, Fat Joe, CyHi the Prynce, J.I.D, Cozz, Ali Tomineek, Kodie Shane, Little Simz, Axel Leon, Mysonne, Tee Grizzley, and 6LACK. The cypher everyone is talking about, though, is Eminem’s brutal freestyle takedown of Donald Trump. He went in hard and called the president out for all kinds of things. He especially focused on racism, referencing Colin Kaepernick and the NFL protests as well as white supremacy generally. Both Kaepernick and LeBron James tweeted their approval.
No awards show is complete without some epic fashion. Stars walked the green carpet in a huge array of styles. There were some risque outfits, like those of Pre-Madonna and Keyshia Ka’oir. There were plenty who went with a laid-back and casual style, like Dave East and T-Pain. Uncle Luke was looking dapper and Cardi B brought the bling with her bejeweled, low-cut gown and long ponytail.
