Aretha Franklin held the record for most Hot 100 songs of any female artist for nearly four decades, but she has now been knocked into second place by Nicki Minaj. The number to beat was 73 and Minaj had been inching closer for years. Minaj tied Franklin when “Make Love” hit the charts on March 18. Not long thereafter, she blew right past the Queen of Soul when three of her songs (“No Frauds,” “Regret in Your Tears,” and “Changed It”) were ranked in the top 100. Now Nicki Minaj owns the new number to beat: 76.
Although Minaj now has more hits on the top 100 charts, Aretha Franklin owns more high-ranking hits than Minaj. This includes #1 hits “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” and “Respect,” #2 hits “Spanish Harlem” and “Chain Of Fools,” and #3 hits “Freeway Of Love” and “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do).” The top-ranking hits in Minaj’s collection of 76 hits are #2 hit “Annaconda” and #3 hit “Super Bass.” Of her latest top 100 hits that helped her surpass Franklin’s record, “No Frauds” came in at #14, “Regret in Your Tears” came in at #61, and “Changed It” came in at #71.
Minaj responded to news of her breaking Franklin’s record in the fashion fans are accustomed to, with an Instagram video of her twerking her excitement. She followed it up with another Instagram post profusely thanking her fans. The Queen of Soul may also be the Queen of Shade, as when asked about Nicki Minaj in 2014 she said only “Hmm… I’m gonna pass on that one.” No word on Franklin’s reaction to Minaj passing her legendary record. For her part, Minaj hasn’t shown any “respect” to the legendary artist whose record she now owns. Not too far behind Nicki Minaj and Aretha Franklin for most Hot 100 songs of any female artist is Taylor Swift with 70 hits. Rihanna and Beyoncé trail a bit with 58 and 54 hits, respectively.
