2017 has certainly been an eventful year in entertainment and in celebrating the achievements of black people in music, film, and sports, the BET Awards has something for everyone. This year’s show takes place on June 25, 2017. Beyoncé leads the list of nominees with seven nods and she’ll be competing with sister Solange in two categories. Here’s a look at some of this year’s nominees.
Best Female R&B/Pop Artist
Mary J. Blige
In this sister vs. sister showdown, Beyoncé is likely to come out on top.
Best Male R&B/Pop Artist
Bruno Mars is just behind Beyoncé with five total nominations this year, and this is likely to be one of the categories he wins.
Best Female Hip Hop Artist
There’s some drama in this category, as arch-rivals Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj go head to head. Minaj usually dominates but Remy could take the crown.
Best Male Hip Hop Artist
Chance the Rapper
All of these artists are at the top of their game, but Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN stole the shine in 2017
Album of the Year
24K Magic – Bruno Mars
4 Your Eyez Only – J. Cole
A Seat at the Table – Solange
Coloring Book – Chance the Rapper
Lemonade – Beyoncé
Strong contenders all, but if Queen Bey doesn’t win Best Album for Lemonade after the Grammy snub, everyone will be surprised.
Bryshere Y. Gray
Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is the favorite here.
Taraji P. Henson
If Henson was to win, it would be three years in a row and her fifth total win in this category.
The Birth of a Nation
The huge deal of Moonlight winning an Oscar was overshadowed a bit by the envelope error. A win here would help, but all of these great films are strong contenders.
Sportswoman of the Year
The Williams sisters remain incredible but after the Olympics this past summer, Simon Biles seems like a sure thing.
Sportsman of the Year
Odell Beckham Jr.
Cam Newton’s record-setting year makes him the likely winner.
