Oscar Night 2017—a night of high profile actors and actresses, prestigious awards, and extreme pressure for all those organizing the event. So how did host Jimmy Kimmel do during his debut? Well, Kimmel killed it—that is, at least until the massive snafu for Best Picture. But besides that, let’s look at how the evening turned out.
Kimmel had his moments of taunting Trump, tossing jokes, and even a brief reflection on the division within the country at the moment. Overall, Kimmel handled his first Oscars with style, wit and an effortless sense of humor. One of the more viral moments during the night was when he jabbed at Trump, using his criticism of Meryl Streep’s career by joking that Streep had, “stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances,” and that she “has phoned it in for more than 50 films over the course of her lackluster career.”
However, the biggest news came at the very end of the broadcast when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were presenting the Best Picture award. In the middle of the thank-you speeches by the La La Land team, the producers realized that in fact Moonlight was the true winner of the Best Picture award and that somehow the wrong envelope had been given to the presenters. Of course Kimmel took full responsibility and joked about how he knew he’d mess up by saying, “Just remember it’s just an awards show,” Kimmel said. “We hate to see people disappointed, but the good news is we got to see some extra speeches….I promise I’ll never come back.”
At the end of the night, the show was a success, with millions of fans watching their favorite stars get the recognition they deserved. The evening was warm with comedy, gratitude—and of course a few mix-ups here and there—making Oscar Night 2017 definitely one to remember.
