Nicki Minaj has promoted a number of causes over the years and has made some huge donations. Her latest act of philanthropy took place unexpectedly on Twitter this Saturday night. While tweeting about a lip-synching contest, she mentioned that she makes plenty of money, enough to fly a winner out from anywhere in the world. A user named CJ jokingly tweeted in response, “Well you wanna pay for my tuition?” No one expected that Minaj would respond the way she did, least of all CJ. In response to CJ, Minaj tweeted: “Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest?!?! Dead serious. Shld I set it up?” Fans were quick to tweet back with requests for money to cover tuition, books, and student loan bills.
Over the next hour, Minaj selected over a dozen lucky students after some back-and-forth with a few of them about the details. To one follower, she tweeted, “If u give me a 4.0, then I’ll keep my end of the bargain.” Among those ultimately chosen were Cesar who asked for $1,000 to cover his summer classes and Josh who asked for $6,000 to cover tuition, fees, room & board, meal plan, and books. Some asked for smaller amounts, like Mona who asked for $400 to pay for books. Minaj often asked for verification of info, but then she was quick to tell the lucky student to send their bank info via direct message and she would pay them the next day. The winners received tweets like “Got ya” and “Done” and “Of course.”
After this spree of giving, Minaj tweeted that “it’s been fun” and that she would be doing it again in a month or two. After that spur of generosity, she went back to tweeting about the original contest. TMZ has confirmed that the money has already showed up in some of the students’ bank accounts. CJ, the guy who started it all with his cheeky tweet, is clearly grateful and forever a fan of the Queen of Rap. He tweeted, “I can’t thank you enough. I’ll never forget this.” The importance of education is something Minaj has stressed before. When meeting young British stars Sophia and Rosie Grace on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she was quick to counsel them on priorities. Minaj told her little fans, “Put your books first and singing second, okay?” With her Twitter giveaway, she took it further by stressing that it was important for students to apply themselves and shoot for that 4.0.
