Every prestigious awards show builds up excitement, especially when it’s the SAFTAs—the South African Film and Television Awards. This year’s 2017 SAFTA nominees have been announced in a field where 400 production companies submitted their work for entries. SAFTA is also known as the Golden Horns, and each award winner receives a stunning Golden Horn statuette, along with a certificate in honor of creative excellence. Nominations for SAFTAs are open only to citizens and permanent residents of South Africa being cited for contributions to television and film. A large group of volunteer judges oversees the process and only casts votes within their specialty.
This year marks the 11th Annual SAFTAs and will be broadcast on SABC.
Channel24 announced the nominees, and one category is especially on the minds of fans.
The 2017 SAFTA Nominees for Best Actress in a TV Drama include:
Brenda Ngxoli for her performance in Hustle; Linda Sokhulu in Sokhulu & Partners; and Tiffany Barbuzano for her role in Sober Companion.
Ms Ngxoli stars in the one-hour TV drama as Kitt Khambule, one of the most popular singers from the 80s, who’s trying to revive a career that’s faded out. The bold television drama goes behind the scenes of the super competitive music industry and is inspired by true South African stories. She won a Golden Horn in 2015 for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Comedy, for her performance in Ses’ Top La and another Golden Horn that year for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama Series, Rockville. Ms Sokhulu has been nominated for her strong performance in the legal TV drama, Sokhulu & Partners. Sokhulu & Partners is a drama about the flourishing Johannesburg legal practice originally started by the Sokhulu brothers, Zweli and Mabutho. The popular series is also up for Best Television Drama.
The actress is no stranger to recognition, having been nominated several times for her keen performances. Ms Sokhulu has previously picked up a Golden Horn award; she has previously won the SAFTA for Best Actress for her role in Sokhulu & Partners, which was also nominated for an International Emmy Award. Ms Barbuzano is another stand-out actress, joining Sokhulu and Ngxoli in the TV drama nominations. She is being recognized for her role as Grace Higginson in the dark comedy series, Sober Companion. She and comedian Trevor Gumbi co-created the enjoyable 30 minute show about the challenges of drug addiction and rehabilitation. Ms Barbuzano is another past winner, having gone home with a 2013 Golden Horn Award for Best Actress in a TV Drama Series for her role in 4Play: Sex Tips for Girls.
