Aurora James is fashion’s new IT girl, enjoying profiles in the hottest fashion magazines the world over. Her love of fashion began at an early age when she stumbled into her mother’s closet and ran her fingers over the delicate silks and satins of her vintage kimonos and tribal moccasins. A native of Toronto, Aurora James visited Africa and became obsessed with the craftsmanship of the textiles that the local artisans were making by hand. In particular, she was drawn to Vellies, a style of shoe that had fallen out of style in Africa. Founding the Brother Vellies brand, she single-handedly resurrected their popularity.
Vellies are created using a technique that has been refined over countless generations. The shoe is constructed using three pieces of leather, with the soles hand sewn onto the pieces. This makes the shoe much more durable than a nailed shoe. The shoe is created using leather from animals that are culled due to overpopulation, and environmentally friendly choice for leather. Aurora James has also gone on to create sandals, and shoes for children as well, with kindness and sustainability at the center of her branding and business.
Aurora James had her first job at the age of 15 in Toronto, interning at a modeling agency. She eventually moved to America where she became a fashion director for GenArt, but became overwhelmed working at fashion shows. It was at this point that she traveled to Africa where she got her inspiration for the life-changing career shift that came with creating the Brother Vellies brand.
With grounded morals in the fashion and business world, Aurora James is committed to helping other women reach their career goals, just as she has. She is an inspiration, not only for the beautiful designs she creates, but for the business she sustains.
